HK mulls 9km monorail

11 Apr 12 Hong Kong’s Development Bureau has set out a proposal to build a 9km, 12-station monorail system linking the Kai Tak development area, Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong.

In a Legislative Council paper tabled yesterday, it said that the proposed monorail would link the MTR Kowloon Bay Station, through Wang Kwong Road to Kai Tak Station Square, where it can interchange with the Kai Tak Station of the future Shatin to Central Link, and terminate at the MTR Kwun Tong Station.

The bureau estimates that the project would cost HK$12bn (£944m) and start services around 2023. The monorail, in the form of a two-car train, could operate at a two-minute interval during peak hours. The forecast daily patronage in 2031 is about 200,000.
