Interserve will strip back the Grade II* listed Aston Webb C Block building, removing most of the latterly added partitions, mezzanine floors, external plant rooms and the part-original first floor.

After significant structural works to ensure the integrity of the existing structure, the original building envelope will be restored. The masonry walls and roof will be insulated internally and the original single glazed metal window system will be refurbished, with a secondary glazing system inserted behind. A total of 1,900 metal window systems are to be refurbished with new secondary glazing systems.

Once completed, the renovated and refurbished building will provide approximately 3,500m2 of internal floor space, including 1,400m2 of new mezzanine areas. New facilities will then include a 250-seat lecture theatre with break-out support spaces, a 170m2 student services hub, seminar rooms, plus new internal and external mechanical plant areas.

This is Interserve’s second contract award from the University of Birmingham in recent weeks. In January it announced that it had been selected to build the university’s new £55m sports centre. Work on this starts in April. Both projects are part of a wider campus development plan.

Interserve regional director Simon Butler said of the latest win: “Working on a project of this nature undertaking the refurbishment of one of the University’s historic buildings is a great opportunity and allows us to build on our relationship with the University of Birmingham”.

Work is set to start on the Aston Webb C Block in March with completion scheduled for June 2015. Interserve’s design partner on the project is Associated Architects of Birmingham.
