While operating profit grew 35% to reach £117.2m, reported pre-tax profit shrank 9% to £61.9m.

Excluding the impact of the acquisitions, including the March 2014 purchase of Initial Facilities, organic growth was 10%.

Interserve Construction contributed £1,178.6m to total group revenues and £26.2m operating profit.

The increasingly dominant Support Services side of the business generated £1,837.1m in revenues and an operating profit of £88.8m.

The operating margin of the UK construction business shrank from 1.8% in 2013 to 1.6% in 2014.

Chief executive Adrian Ringrose said: "2014 was a landmark year for the business in which we advanced our strategy and delivered 35% operating profit growth including strong organic growth despite continuing challenging conditions in a number of our markets. We made two strategic acquisitions (Initial Facilities and the Employment & Skills Group), each of which deepened our presence in core outsourcing markets.

“Looking to the future, we are encouraged by the growth potential of the business. Our attractive positioning in our core markets and our ability to identify, invest in and deliver on attractive project and corporate opportunities is a powerful differentiator."

Interserve chairman stands down

After more than nine years in the post, Interserve’s non-executive chairman Lord Blackwell is stepping down.

Lord Blackwell, chairman since January 2006, will step down no later than the 2016 annual general meeting in May, at which point Interserve will begin the search for a successor.

As Norman Blackwell, he was a member of the Number 10 Policy Unit advising prime minister Margaret Thatcher and headed John Major’s policy unit when he was PM.

His other current boardroom roles include non-executive director of Lloyds Banking Group.
