GML Construction was set up in 1991 by Alan Proto who was last year named ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ in the Kent Excellence in Business Awards.
The company was also named as ‘SME of the Year’ at the London & Southeast final of the Constructing Excellence Awards 2011.
GML, based in Coxheath, near Maidstone, was victim of the economic downturn, Mr Proto told the local press. GML specialised in modular and timber-frame construction projects and a lot of the company’s workload had come from local authorities and, in particular, schools.
Mr Proto’s Linked In page puts GML’s turnover at £7m, ‘expected to grow to £15m+ next three years’.
All staff were laid off at the start of the year and administrators from Moore Stephens LLP were appointed on 16 January.
