At the same time it has got the go-ahead for a new £60m male medium secure unit (MSU) at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing.

Kier’s contract values are £115m and £43m respectively.

Both projects are in partnership with the West London Mental Health Trust (WLMHT), which secured final approval from the Department of Health on 23 December.

Kier will replace outdated Victorian buildings with new purpose-built hospitals.

The two-year redevelopment programme at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing will create an 80-bed medium secure unit. This will sit alongside the existing regional secure unit (RSU) and Wells Unit surrounded by a secure perimeter with one single entrance to create the Three Bridges Medium Secure Campus.

Simultaneously, the trust will be completing the redevelopment of Broadmoor Hospital which will see the construction of 10 new wards in addition to six existing ones. When completed in 2017 the hospital will be able to accommodate 210 male patients.

WLMHT chairman Nigel McCorkell said:  “This is a significant achievement for everyone involved in mental health care. Given the difficulties and restrictions the current environments present at Broadmoor Hospital and the St Bernard’s MSU, our doctors, nurses and other staff have done an amazing job of providing high quality and safe care for our patients and service users.”

Managing director of Kier Construction’s major projects business, Colin Lamb, added: “Kier has a proven track record of delivering highly complex projects creating facilities for the health sector, and this latest milestone is a significant development that demonstrates how successful the collaboration between the partners has been."
