The Town House will be a key feature of Kingston University's Penrhyn Road campus and is the first phase of its £260m estate development plan.

The new building, designed by Grafton Architects, will act as the university's reception building. It will include a library and have a covered courtyard designed for events.

Construction is expected to start in spring 2017, with completion by September 2019.

It replaces an outdated, temporary building with a more sustainable BREEAM Excellent design.

Acting vice-chancellor Steven Spier said: "The Town House will be transformational – a place in which students, staff and local people alike will be able to learn and develop."

Willmott Dixon already has a track-record working on university estates. Its £300m recent workload includes creating a ‘living-green wall’ for Teesside University, Birmingham City University’s Curzon building, Bournemouth University’s ‘Fusion’ building and Leicester University’s Centre for Medicine. It was also recently appointed to build an annexe to the Schuster Building for the University of Manchester and has just completed an upgrade to the University of Derby’s STEM building and a new campus in Scarborough for Coventry University.
