Client Mosley Street Ventures has given Laing O’Rourke a scheduled completion date of January 2017 for the £80m project. The contractor plans to use offsite construction as far as possible to speed delivery.

Two St Peter’s Square will be an 11-storey building with 161,113 square feet of space. Architect is SimpsonHaugh & Partners.

Mosley Street Ventures director, Darryl Lee said: “We were impressed with the proposal Laing O’Rourke put forward. They have an excellent reputation and we are looking forward to the start of construction.”

He added: “Once the project is completed it will be one of the most prestigious office buildings in Manchester. The building has been designed to complement the changing face of St Peters Square being sympathetic to its history and architecture.”

Tom Higgins, who leads Laing O’Rourke in the north, said: “We have a strong working knowledge of the St Peter’s Square heritage development area, through our delivery of the Town Hall Complex transformation and Second City Crossing. This, combined with our use of offsite techniques and modern methods of construction, means we’ll be able to deliver a high quality scheme far more efficiently and with minimal disruption to the city centre.”
