Lendlease picked for Sydney highway scheme

31 May 17 Lendlease has won a road construction contract as part of the AU$3.6bn (£2.1bn) Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan in Australia.

The contractor has been named for the next stages of the Northern Road and Bringelly Road upgrades. Federal minister for urban infrastructure Paul Fletcher said Lendlease will build the 11.5km section of the Northern Road between Peter Brock Drive and Mersey Road as well as the 4.3km upgrade of Bringelly Road between King Street at Rossmore and The Northern Road at Bringelly. The overall AU$1.6bn Northern Road project involves 35km of upgrades.

“These upgrades will prepare one of Australia’s fastest growing region’s roads for future traffic growth and improve travel times for motorists by widening the existing roads to four lanes in each direction,” said Fletcher. “The Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan is transforming the economy of Western Sydney by supporting the Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, which will be operational by 2026.”

The Australian government has committed up to AU$5.3bn over 10 years in the 2017-18 budget to build Western Sydney Airport through a new company.

Work on the upgrades is expected to start in coming months and be completed by 2020, weather permitting.
