The £21.8m programme will create 70 new homes for social rent and homes for sale on council-owned land as well as provide improved open spaces, estates paths, play areas and community facilities.

Lovell is set to start work on the three-year construction programme in February. It is the company’s first contract awarded through Islington’s new build contractor framework.

The new energy-efficient housing – 36 apartments and 34 houses – will be built on nine sites at the estate, including former garages and car parking. The existing Romford House will also be replaced with a new purpose-built development for residents aged over 55.

The scheme has been designed by architect Pollard Thomas Edwards.
