Mace pitches to build Milan marquee

6 Mar 14 The contractor behind Britain’s tallest building is mixing it with the minnows in pursuit of a contract likely to be worth considerably less than £5m.

Mace, builder of the 306m-high Shard, is one of seven companies shortlisted by the Department of Business & Enterprise to put up the UK Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015. Most of the shortlisted firms are exhibition specialists with more experience of temporary structures than skyscrapers.

The shortlisted constructors are:

  • Cooperativa Muratori and Cementisti – CMC di Ravenna
  • GL events Owen Brown
  • Impresa di Costruzioni Ing. E. Mantovani S.p.A
  • Nussli UK Ltd
  • Mace Limited
  • Pico In-Creative (UK)
  • Stage One Creative Services.

The theme of the expo is ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’.  Eight creative teams have been shortlisted to design the pavilion and create its content.

The winning team will be asked to highlight world class British research, innovation, entrepreneurship and international development interventions contributing to improving the quality of people’s lives and meeting the global challenge of feeding the planet under the working title ‘Grown in Britain: Shared Globally’.

UK commissioner general Hannah Corbett said: “The Milan Expo will be a unique opportunity for the UK to demonstrate our world class innovation and creativity to millions of people around the globe. I have been impressed by the number of companies who applied and delighted that the final list represents such a diverse cross-section of British talent.”
