Mulholland Contracts invests in JCBs

5 Jan 15 One Scotland’s largest privately-owned construction companies has made a multi-million pound investment in new JCB equipment.

West Lothian-based Mulholland Contracts has ordered 21 new JCB machines including 11 new Tier 4i tracked excavator models.

Supplied by dealer Scot JCB, the order includes JCB JS145, JS160, and JS220 excavators along with JCB 3CX backhoe loaders and VMT 260-120 tandem rollers. They join an exclusively JCB, 75-machine fleet of heavy plant.

Several of the new models have already been put to work at South Queensferry, near Edinburgh, at one of the largest new house-building projects in Scotland. Mulholland Contracts has won the groundworks contract for this Cala/Barratt East Scotland joint venture. Phase one involves groundworks in preparation for 408 homes including foundations, plot drainage, floor slabs, driveways and paths.

Phase two will see the machines involved in infrastructure work including: the excavation of 102,500m3 of soils and hardcore; the construction of 47,700m2 of roads, footpaths and parking; improved parking at the nearby mainline railway station and the creation of 13,000m of adoptable sewers and 1500m3 of Aquacell surface water attenuation.

Mulholland Contracts finance director Kevin Breen said: “We choose JCB machines for our fleet due to their value for money and the excellent service and support we receive across Scotland through our longstanding relationship with Scot JCB.

“Using JCB LiveLink telematics we are able to remotely monitor machine activity and performance and we have already seen impressive fuel savings of 10% on the new Tier 4i models when compared to earlier machines.”
