Murphy goes for Cat zero tailswing excavators

21 Mar 14 Civils contractor J Murphy & Sons has taken delivery of the UK’s first eight Cat 314E LCR hydraulic excavators.

It has also bought five Cat 320E LRR hydraulic excavators, bringing its total fleet of Caterpillar machines to 25.

Working in numerous space-restricted job-sites, including railway sidings and motorways, J Murphy & Sons required mid-sized machinery with zero-tail swing like these.

Plant, transport and procurement director John Coll said: “As a business, we operate in a multitude of different applications that can prove to be challenging when matching plant equipment. We consulted a number of suppliers and manufacturers outlining our requirements, and ideally, we were looking to form a partnership with a supplier. We found [Cat dealer] Finning encompassed everything we were looking for in terms of equipment, back-up support and cost.

“A large percentage of our work requires machinery to operate in areas where space is minimal. The Cat 314E LCRs and Cat 320E LRRs have reduced-radius designs that keep the upper-structure within the machines’ footprint, which reduces the risk of damaging the machine or surrounding obstacles.”
