New video game tackles ageing infrastructure

4 Feb 16 A Finnish company has developed a video game that involves the investigation of structural problems in abandoned factories, forgotten tunnels and unsafe buildings.

Developer Loiste Interactive describes Infra as “an atmospheric and completely non-violent first-person puzzle adventure that deals with the issues of deteriorating infrastructure”.

Along the way, the player takes photos of structural weaknesses, solves environmental puzzles and unravel a story centred around corruption and deception.

The developer says: "Infra puts you into the boots of a structural analyst – nothing more than a desk jockey assigned to survey some routine structural damage. Quickly though, your task turns from a mundane trek to a fight for survival, all caused by deep-rooted schemes of the past."

Securing funding for the project proved difficult. Success on the Steam Greenlight gaming community prompted the team to found the company and start looking for investors. “By 2015, we had managed to raise some money from investors, but not enough to finish the entire game. This lead to us running a short-lived fundraising campaign, and after it failed, we needed to take drastic action to get the game out at all.” The decision was taken to split the game into two parts; the first was launched last month.

The game involves solve various puzzles, exploring detailed maps with multiple routes and hidden secrets, visiting dozens of locations each with distinctive gameplay, avoiding hazards, learning about the game’s city of Stalburg and its people and uncovering the scheme behind the city's problems.

The website for the £10.99 game is at infragame.net (link opens in new tab).
