Oxford council backs £500m retail development

13 Mar 14 A £500m retail-led mixed use development in Oxford is set to go ahead after the city council resolved to grant outline planning permission.

Westgate Oxford Alliance, a joint venture between The Crown Estate and Land Securities, is planning a redevelopment of the Westgate Centre and adjacent land. John Lewis has signe dup as anchor department store, and it is scheduled to open in 2017.

The existing Westgate shopping centre will be completely refurbished and adjacent land to the south will be redeveloped to provide approximately 100 new shops, cafés and restaurants, a cinema and between 27 and 122 new homes. There will also be a two-storey basement car park excavated to provide approximately 1,000 spaces.

The Westgate Oxford Alliance is now working up detailed designs with four architectural practices: Allies & Morrison, Dixon Jones Architects, Glen Howells Architects and Panter Hudspith. The process is being overseen by BDP as masterplanner.

The Alliance will be consulting on the detailed designs in the spring and aims to submit a planning application later this year.
