Reunion gets funding for new road

14 May 15 The European Investment Bank (EIB) is lending Reunion Island 500m euros (£358m) to build a new coast road.

The New Coast Road (NCR) will provide the island with a 12km-long three-lane dual carriageway, including two lanes reserved for public transport, linking Saint Denis to La Possession in the west. Traffic is currently at nearly 20 million vehicles a year on the route between the island’s two main employment centres – the port in the west and the airport in the north.

The NCR will replace the existing RN1. It will be built at a safe distance from the cliff face thanks to the construction of a combination of causeways and viaducts, with six causeway and two viaduct sections. The existing road is exposed to major natural risks such as falling rocks and high seas. The project is expected to create nearly 3,000 jobs, direct and indirect, throughout the duration of the works.
