Rhode Island moves forward with four highway upgrades

17 Feb 16 The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) in the USA has started the tender process for four tolling projects under its RhodeWorks project to improve crumbling infrastructure.

It has issued of four requests for proposals for firms to assist in establishing tolling systems to provide a revenue stream for carrying out the highway upgrades. The proposals also will seek firms to assist RIDOT in repairing the deficient Route 6-10 interchange and developing an improved transport corridor with an integrated transit component.

Adverts have now been published and selection process will begin in about a month, with work  starting this spring.

"We are so very grateful to Governor Raimondo and the General Assembly for the passage of the RhodeWorks legislation so we can begin in earnest the process of rebuilding our roads and bridges and giving Rhode Islanders a transportation system they can be proud of and depend on," said RIDOT director Peter Alviti Jr. "We have been saying throughout the debate on the RhodeWorks initiative that we would be ready to hit the ground running once it passes. We are running starting today."

The requests for proposals include a toll Facility Consultant to act as owner's representative, a traffic and revenue consultant to develop expand on earlier traffic and revenue studies, a consultant to begin the environmental review process for the reconstruction of the Route 6-10 interchange and one to focus on preliminary design work to advance the project into the next design phase. The consultant will also prepare a request-for-proposals for a design/build project, seeking a public-private-partnership model.

RIDOT said it will select different consulting firms for each of the four contracts.
