Saudi construction spending reaches all-time high

17 Feb 14 The Saudi construction sector is reaching record levels as the government continues a dual push toward providing new services and diversifying the economy away from the oil sector.

Figures from the National Commercial Bank’s construction contracts index for the fourth quarter of 2013 show that work worth SR293.4bn (£46.7bn) was awarded.

Significant expenditure is planned for the education and manpower sectors (SR210bn), health and social affairs (SR108bn), municipal services (SR39bn), transportation and infrastructure (SR66bn) and water, agriculture and manufacturing (SR61bn).

“While we project the government’s capital expenditures to decrease from SR278bn in 2013 to SR238bn in 2014, the value of awarded contracts will continue in line with the activity that has been witnessed over the last few years,” said the The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh.

The SR293.4bn in awarded contracts during 2013 was largely down to the government’s continued expansion of capital expenditures and was 25% up on 2012.
