Steelworks milestone reached at Abu Dhabi air terminal

13 Feb 15 Steelwork for all the piers of Abu Dhabi Airport’s massive new terminal is now virtually complete.

Turner & Townsend said that the steelwork for the Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) has been declared 99% complete. The MTB, which will be one of the world’s largest passenger terminals, has four piers that accommodate 65 stands in total.

There are 20,000 people working on the construction of the terminal. Turner & Townsend’s role is to task to deliver cost estimating, scheduling, and risk management services.

The longest pier stretches over 500m, with the four piers using a total of 13,300t of steel. The building enclosure includes the glass works for the curtain walling and roofing works, which will require 175,000m2 of glass for the curtain walling and 260,000m2 of aluminium for the roof.

As it continues to take shape, with evidence of progress visible on a daily basis, the achievement of that objective draws ever closer,” said Abu Dhabi Airports chairman Ali Majed Al Mansoori.
