Taylor Wimpey to develop surplus defence land in Folkestone

27 Mar 13 The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has named Taylor Wimpey as its preferred developer for a housebuilding project in Folkestone.

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) plans to consolidate army housing at Shorncliffe Garrison in Folkestone onto a smaller site and free up land that it owns for up to 1,200 new homes for civilians.

Releasing the land for commercial development enables the MoD to fund the moderisatiopn of its retained estate and build a new Army Cadet centre.

The DIO has worked with Shepway District Council to prepare a masterplan that provides new housing over the next 20 years on the surplus brownfield land. This will be built by Taylor Wimpey.

Replacement facilities for the Army will start to be built this year as part of a rolling programme of improvements at Shorncliffe and nearby Lydd Camp. These will include more than 100 ensuite rooms for single service people. There will be new office space for military and civilian staff, plus storage and training accommodation.

Peter Truscott, Taylor Wimpey South divisional chairman, said: “We are looking forward to working with Shepway District Council and DIO to create an exciting new community and deliver much needed new homes, supporting infrastructure and facilities to Folkestone.”
