TfL accelerates £3.1bn Bakerloo plan

8 Dec 16 Transport for London is looking to start construction of a £3.1bn extension of the Bakerloo line by 2022.

The Bakerloo line extension would take the tube service in a tunnel from Elephant & Castle through to New Cross Gate and Lewisham in southeast London.

The TfL board is next week expected to approve a second-stage consultation exercise to be held in January 2017 to discuss locations of stations, shafts and construction worksites. An initial public consultation in 2014 found overwhelming support for the concept.

The current proposal is for new stations at Lewisham, New Cross Gate, Old Kent Road South and Old Kent Road North. Elephant & Castle station would also be expanded.

If all goes to plan, TfL aim to submit an application for an order under the

Transport and Works Act 1992 (TWAO) in 2020. Detailed design and procurement would take place in 2020/21; construction in 2021/22 and completion in 2028/29.

The target completion date has been brought forward two years from 2031 to fit in with planned improvements on the existing Bakerloo line.
