Time-lapse footage shows Ilkeston bridge replacement

8 Feb 17 Network Rail has released time-lapse footage of the replacement of a bridge over the railway in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

The video shows the existing Awsworth Road bridge being removed and the second one being driven into place, with almost 24 hours of construction work condensed into just 140 seconds of footage. It shows wooden decking being laid over the tracks, which usually carry 200 trains a day, before the old bridge is carefully lifted out and the new one is driven into place.

Heavy lifting specialist ALE was contracted to supply and erect trestling for both the new and old bridges, and to remove the existing bridge, weighing 425 tonnes, and install the new bridge, weighing 525 tonnes.

Network Rail project manager Chris Chatfield said: “The footage shows the amount of planning and precision that needs to go into a project like this in order to keep both the road and the railway closed the shortest amount of time.”

The removal and installation of the bridge took place in one shift as part of the 29-hour possession over the weekend of the 17-18 December 2016. The overall project will be completed by the end of April.
