Vinci to give HMP Pentonville £12m facelift

3 Jan 23 The Ministry of Justice has awarded Vinci Construction a £12m contract to revamp the entrance building at Pentonville prison in London.

HMP Pentonville’s Victorian Grade II-listed Gatehouse building in Caledonian Road has visible cracks caused by subsidence and requires substantial reconstruction.

Planning documents submitted to Islington Council in 2021 stated: “The external public face of the Gatehouse and adjoining visitor building will be fully renovated with replacement windows and render and removal of much of the existing visual clutter.

“The proposed replacement of the central utilitarian infill with new semi-transparent curtain walling and new signage will create a more welcoming entrance to the prison and enhance the prison’s presence in the local street-scene.”

Vinci Facilities is constructor and lead designer for the project. Turner & Townsend Project Management is the client’s representative. Currie & Brown UK is the cost consultant and principal designer.

Vinci took possession of the site in November and completion is scheduled for August 2024.

The agreed maximum price is £11,910,971 excluding VAT, fees and client risk contingency.
