VolkerRail buys kit for installing masts

27 Apr 17 VolkerRail has bought specialist equipment for the installation of new overhead line masts for its work on phase three of the North West Electrification Programme.

The heavy-duty manipulators will work with the company’s fleet of Colmar cranes to install over 1,100 overhead line masts along the railway lines. Three-dimensional rotation capability enables the manipulators to grip, lift and position a number of different structures into place.

Benefits of the new manipulators including helping increase output per possession, reducing the need for working at height and lessening the number of operatives required in the crane exclusion zone.

Plant general manager Mark Jackson said: “This is a really positive opportunity for the whole delivery team; being able to use a methodology that enhances efficiency as well as helping to improve our control over some key risks. This is a great example of the benefits of early contractor involvement, helping client, contractor and plant specialist become aligned to create benefit for all.”
