The project will transform the hospital with the addition of a new three-storey elective care hub that will house a state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI (iMRI) machine. This new equipment will allow more children to receive treatment locally, avoiding the need to travel to other parts of the UK. The redevelopment will also provide additional space for clinical services.

As part of the wider redevelopment, other improvements include replacing the original hospital entrance with a larger, light-filled entryway featuring a welcoming glass façade. The hospital will also benefit from improved thermal performance and energy efficiency, with the use of ground source heat pump technology to extract heat from the ground and keep the hospital warm.

It was essential that the hospital remained open and fully operational during construction, so the crane supplied by Bennetts needed to operate safely and efficiently within space constraints, without hindering day-to-day activity.

The crane recommended by Bennetts for the job—a Saez SL450—was installed with a 50m jib capable of lifting 6.5t. To ensure the crane build didn’t take up excessive space, the jib arrived in two sections and was then assembled on the ground in two lifts, which also helped minimise disruption on-site.
