There is an ongoing drive for a more inclusive culture, historically construction being renowned for its male dominated façade; perhaps, the pre-conceived perceptions not being a draw when career paths are determined.

Burmor were delighted when Anglia Ruskin University were given the green light to expand their offering and open a brand new campus in the City of Peterborough; not only is it great for the local economy but it also produces a pipeline of talent right on our doorstep.

The campus has consulted with local employers, using them as a sounding board to develop the course offerings and to find out what the needs of local businesses are; having this level of input means an adaption to suit industry demand.

As a Chartered Building Company with the CIOB, and members of our team representing the CIOB Tomorrow’s Leader community, we were driven to give back to the university and support them with their aims to integrate the skills, and knowledge required to make a work ready cohort.

Working together with the CIOB and ARU Peterborough, we hosted Mark Harrison, Head of Equality Divesity and Inclusion, at the new campus where he shared the important of Ethics and Professionalism within construction. He gave the students an insight into the importance of the bigger picture within construction, ensuring that companies were striving for cultures that were in keeping with the community representation and not a one size fits all approach. The talk was well received, with some excellent open conversations with the students about their experiences in the workplace, and how they see change being implemented.
