A construction worker is in a serious condition after being crushed by an excavator on the site of a new Waitrose supermarket in York.

The man was fighting for his life in York Hospital last night, reported The Press.

He is thought to be employed by Leeds-based Howard Civil Engineering, which works for main contractor Wates Construction.

The accident occurred yesterday morning when the worker was trapped between a digger and a gate at the site's entrance in Foss Islands Road.

A spokesman for Wates said: “The site has been sealed off and a Health and Safety Executive investigation is underway.

“We are cooperating fully with their investigation.”

The £5m project involved rebuilding the existing 36,000 sq ft store, and adding an exterior café area. It is scheduled to open on 28 October.
