CARE International asks the construction industry: challenge yourself and challenge poverty.

11 Nov 11 This month the charity launches the third CARE Construction Challenge, taking place on Saturday 30th June 2012. The event is for teams from across every level of construction from architecture to property sale.

The CARE Construction Challenge has taken place in a different stunning UK location for the past three years. In 2012, teams will descend on Purbeck peninsula on the south coast to complete a marathon distance on foot, bike and kayak. The challenge will see participants running or hiking through forests and heathland, cycling along cliff tops with panoramic views and sea kayaking from picturesque beaches.

The demanding day will finish with a well-deserved dinner and celebrations in Bournemouth where awards will be presented to winners. BAM Nuttall won the challenge in 2011, taking the title from 2010 champions, Wilmott Dixon.  The gauntlet is down for 2012!

CARE’s work

CARE fights poverty through long-term development projects, reducing people’s vulnerability and strengthening their independence. CARE responds to humanitarian emergencies such as drought, famine, floods, earthquakes and conflict. This is where CARE strikes a chord with the construction industry.

When emergencies strike, CARE works to meet people's basic shelter needs: protection from the elements, security and a base for their livelihoods. CARE provides fast, effective disaster relief to communities, buying materials locally where possible. CARE knows shelter means more than just walls and a roof. Secure shelter is a catalyst for enabling families to recover from emergencies. Shelter protects health and supports access to water and sanitation services.

Head of CARE Challenge Neil Munro says “The CARE Construction Challenge raised £50,000 in 2010 and £63,000 in 2011. A thousand pounds can build a transitional shelter to protect a family for five years after a devastating emergency, like the shelters CARE has built after the Haiti earthquake. We want to beat our fundraising figure again in 2012 so I urge businesses from across the industry to enter a team!”

The CARE Construction Challenge is supported by corporate partner Costain Group PLC.
