Police said the 58-year-old, who has not been named, was found in a water-filled hole at Longhoughton Quarry, near Alnwick, on Saturday afternoon.
The man, from Northumberland, had been operating excavating machinery.
He was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital, but later pronounced dead.
Police and Health and Safety Executive officials are investigating.
