12 Sep 14 A joint venture of Züblin and Hochtief has won a €122m (£98m) contract to build the Cherbourger Strasse harbour tunnel in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Ed Züblin is technical leader of the JV with a 37 % share, with Hochtief Solutions acting as commercial leader and taking a 33 % share and Züblin Spezialtiefbau responsible for the remaining 30%.

The contract  includes the construction of the two-lane road tunnel, using an open-cut construction method, as well as all entrance and exit ramps, two operation buildings and 10 escape staircases. The JV will also be responsible for most of the construction planning.

The main tube will be 1,195m long and and at the eastern end it will divide into two separate tubes. The total length will be 1,848 m (north side) and 1,659 m (south side).

Building of the complex membrane-wall construction pit with an underwater concrete floor will start this year. The tunnel is scheduled to be finished by the end of June 2018.
