Jordan gets funding for trio of solar projects

12 Nov 14 Jordan has secured US$100m (£63m) of loans to fund the construction of three solar photovoltaic generation plants in the south of the country.

The European Bank for Reconstruction &  Development (EBRD) and the French Development Finance Institution Proparco are each providing US$50m for the new plants, which will deliver 40 MW. Jordan currently imports over 97% of the energy it consumes.

The three projects have been developed jointly by Norwegian solar power company Scatec Solar, together with its Jordanian partners, European Jordanian Renewable Energy Projects, Greenland Alternative Energy and Quest Energy Investments.

Nandita Parshad, EBRD director for power and energy, said: “Jordan has outstanding renewable resources, especially solar, and we are committed to develop this sector and to help increase Jordan's energy supply while reducing its environmental impact.”
