A design services contract has been awarded to architect AHR and Mace has been appointed cost consultancy and contract administrator for the project.

UKHO’s new office will replace its existing buildings in Taunton, which the organisation’s management says is inefficient and expensive to maintain. Cost of the development will be met from the self-funding agency’s own business receipts.

The UKHO, which produces maps and charts for the Royal Navy and merchant shipping, will continue to operate from its current buildings until the new office is ready, which is planned for 2019. Existing buildings will then be demolished and the land at the front of the site will be sold for redevelopment.

Chief executive John Humphrey said: “Having secured approval for our new accommodation the award of the first contracts is an important milestone in the design and build of our future accommodation. I am looking forward to seeing our requirements brought to life to create a very tangible vision for UKHO’s future.”
