OCI-Vinci-Arab team bags Egyptian barrage

13 Dec 11 OCI-Vinci-Arab Contractors Joint Venture has won the EGP1.8bn (£187m) civil works package for a new barrage and 32MW hydropower plant in Assiut, Egypt.

The new barrage will be built 400m downstream of an existing barrage. Construction work includes a sluiceway with eight 17m-wide radial gates, a hydropower plant , a ship lock with two chambers of 120m by 17m, a road bridge, an 11m-tall embankment dam and rehabilitation or replacement of the Ibrahimia canal head regulator. A section of the Nile River will also be deepened in order to mitigate any potential increase in groundwater levels in Assiut and neighbouring areas.

The project was awarded by the Reservoirs and Grand Barrages Sector (RGBS) of the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources& Irrigation, and is partially funded by Germany's government-owned development bank Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.
