Philippine MRT scheme gets approval

23 Apr 13 The president of the Philippines has approved the construction of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system designed by British transport consultancy ITP.

ITP is lead consultant on the project and the Department of Transportation & Communication (DOTC), in coordination with Cebu City government, will prepare and implement the scheme.

President Benigno Aquino III also approved a light rail transit (LRT) system in Cebu. He said that the BRT would be situated at ground level while the LRT would be built overhead.

The BRT has an approximate cost of P17.5 billion (£270m) and it aims to improve the traffic in Cebu as well as decreasing the carbon footprint. The Philippine government has proposed the Cebu City BRT as part of a Clean Technology Fund country investment plan developed in 2009.

External funding will be sourced from the World Bank, Clean Technology Fund and the French Development Agency (AFD).
The BRT will cover three cities in Cebu, namely Lapulapu, Mandaue, and Cebu.
