Skanska lands $490m Rio power plant

7 Nov 11 Skanska has won US$490m (£306m) contract to build a 550MW natural gas thermal power plant in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract for Petrobas is Skanska’s biggest contract in Latin America.  It will be built in Seropédica, at Baixada Fluminense, 75km from Rio de Janeiro and 350km from São Paulo.

Skanska is the project’s single contractor and will be responsible for the basic design, detailed engineering and construction of the facilities, including civil works and electro-mechanical installations. The contract also encompasses the procurement of equipment and material. In addition, Skanska will assist in the start-up and operation of the thermal power plant.

The project will start immediately for completion in the fourth quarter of 2014. About 1,500 workers will be involved once the project reaches its peak.
