Volvo grader for McFadyens

9 Dec 10 McFadyens Contractors, of Campbeltown, Argyllshire, has replaced its old Aveling Barford with a new 21-tonne Volvo G940 motor grader for Forestry Commission road maintenance work.

The Volvo G940 has been designed to match transmission speeds and power-to-weight ratios to ensure maximum blade down pressure and blade pull.  Volvo says that it optimises weight placement over the drive wheels and over a long blade base.  This delivers more power to the ground, and so speeds cycle times. The G940 has an operating weight of 21.3t, a maximum blade pull of 12,819kg and a blade down pressure of 8,145kg.

The Volvo 7.0 litre engine gives up to 215hp and maximum torque of 1023Nm at 1550rpm. With 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds, the fully sequential HTE840 direct-drive transmission has the correct speed for every operation.  There are 5 speeds below 16.6kph for all grading operations, a high-speed road maintenance gear, a snow-ploughing speed, and a gear for roading giving a maximum speed of 45.4kph.
