Birkenshaw Middle School became a secondary academy last year and Wates’ wpork will complete the conversion.
The contractors has been appointed by the BBG Academy Trust to refurbish the existing 2,775m2school building and build a 3,000m2 extension.
Designed by Halliday Clark, the new-build element includes a central courtyard that will become the school’s focal point.
Completion of the project is scheduled for September 2013.
Wates Construction director David Price said: “The new BBG Academy is an example of the resourceful use of existing buildings in the creation of exceptional educational facilities. Our extensive knowledge of education buildings will enable us to create an outstanding learning environment for the young people of the Birkenshaw, Birstall, Gomersal and East Bierley area."
