London City Airport expansion: building a deck over King George V Dock

London City Airport chief development officer Peter Adams introduces the two-year piling and decking phase of the £480m City Airport Development Programme (CADP).
To build the airport’s eight new aircraft stands, passenger terminal facilities, and a new parallel taxiway, due for completion in 2022, the airport has contracted BAM Nuttall to build a 75,000m² concrete deck, supported by more than 1,000 piles (each around 17.5 metres deep and one metre in diameter). This deck, over the dock waters of King George V Dock, will provide a platform on which the new infrastructure will sit.
