Tunnelling innovation on HS2
HS2’s main works contractor, Align, has developed robotic arms to automate the hazardous process of removing wooden spacers – effectively packaging material – from between tunnel lining segments arriving down the tunnel.

The Align joint venture – a team made up of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick – has to bore 10 miles of twin tunnels under the Chilterns.
