Longcliffe Quarries Ltd. were established in 1927 and are one of the very few independent hard rock quarries left in England, and one of the largest.

Employing over 170 people, some of whose forebears also worked for the company, and proud of the fact that many employee have been with the company for more than 25 years.

For many years we have recognised our responsibilities within the local community and to the environment in general.

The company often hosts visits by local primary and secondary schools and is a regular venue for student groups studying geology, chemistry and environmental science from nearby universities.

The quarrying industry plays a vital role in maintaining and improving biodiversity and Longcliffe is passionately committed to the protection of the environment. We always strive to be a good neighbour and our substantial investment in environmentally-friendly measures will ensure a lasting legacy for the benefit of the future generations.

History

Since 1927, Longcliffe has been a big part of the Derbyshire Hill community, transforming the landscape and providing many jobs for local residents. Over the last 90 years, we have established our name in the UK limestone industry, becoming one of the finest and largest suppliers of calcium carbonate powders and aggregates.

The Brassington Moor Quarry was established in 1927 and still remains an integral part of the operations at Longcliffe. In 1945. After almost 20 years of quarrying limestone for industrial purposes, we began producing agricultural limes for the farming industry. Our limes are still used, to this day, in agricultural applications to help neutralise soil acidity and improve crop growth.

In 2010, Longcliffe secured the purchase of the Ryder Point Quarry enabling us to produce and supply a range of dolomite aggregates for the decorative, concrete and construction markets.

As an environmentally conscious company, we took the decision in 2015 to install two wind turbines on our sites, providing us with a reliable supply of renewable energy. We hope to increase this number in the future to ensure Longcliffe remains a sustainable quarry.

Longfloor – Liquid Cement Screed - Its here! – A revolutionary development for liquid cement screed

Longfloor is a dry powder bulk binder for the manufacture of a cement based liquid screed to a specification BS EN 13813:2002. Liquid screeds are also referred to as self-levelling or flowing. The binder is delivered in bulk powder tankers for storage in a silo. They are typically manufactured in specialist screed and mortar or ready mixed concrete batching plants, either through a pan mixer or batched straight in to a lorry mounted rotating drum mixer. Manufacture through volumetric trucks is also possible.

Longfloor binder consists principally of very fine high purity ground limestone, (calcium carbonate) powder plus a suite of dry chemical reagents and admixtures. The limestone powder assists flow and has cementitious properties which reduces the amount of cement required. Sophisticated controls are built in to the Longfloor manufacturing process to ensure the highest level of product consistency. Other reagents and admixtures reduce water demand, assist flow and act to counter bleeding and shrinkage.

Longfloor binder is added to a fine aggregate, cement and water and delivered by concrete a mixer truck from a stockists plant. Further liquid flow or retarder admixtures may also be added prior to placing.. The quality assured Longfloor manufacturing plant is new and state of the art. A variety of raw materials and proportioned, milled and blended along with Longcliffe Quarries’ exceptionally pure fine calcium carbonate limestone powder.

Last year, Longfloor introduced their new “IntegraCure” product. Since the introduction of horizontally laid self-compacting concretes some 20 years ago and more recently, cementitious flowing screeds, these materials have all been bound by the same problem – the need to use a spray applied curing agent.

The curing agent is required to stop the material drying out too quickly which could result in plastic shrinkage cracking. It is a process reliant on selecting the correct curing agent for the product and application, ensuring the application equipment is of the right standard and the material is sprayed at the correct dosage. More often than not, one or more of these processes does not take place, resulting in issues. IntegraCure completely removes this process from the installation of the screed. Longfloor Integacure has the curing agent fully integrated within the binder system, negating the need for a spray applied product. This places Longfloor at the forefront of product development and technology with the global first.
