Amec Foster Wheeler to add biomass backup to Finnish power plant

29 Mar 16 Amec Foster Wheeler is to supply a biomass dust combustion plant to increase the capacity of a Finnish power station.

Utility company Seinäjoen Energia will operate the biomass system as a back-up for a peak load district heating plant and increase capacity to 120MWth. Combustio of heavy fuel oil will be replaced with biomass-based fuels, including wood pellets, wood briquette, bark and forest residue pellets, dried forest residues, agrofuel pellets and peat pellets, with coal as a reserve fuel.

Work will begin this spring 2016 and the plant will be handed over to Seinäjoen Energia for commercial operation in December.

Amec Foster Wheeler’s work scope on the turnkey contract includes the supply of a new 90MWth biomass pellet dust boiler with auxiliary equipment, modification of the existing oil-fired boiler to 30MWth wood pellet firing, storage silos and handling equipment for biomass fuels, flue gas cleaning systems, stack, modifications to the boiler house, electrification, instrumentation and automation installed and commissioned.

“This investment increases significantly the share of renewable fuels in Seinäjoen Energia heat production,” said Seinäjoen Energia CEO Martti Haapamäki. “The possibility to adopt to the changing conditions in the future was highly appreciated in the decision process. Having a wide fuel envelope in plant design was especially important for us.”
