New paver for SQS

9 Aug 11 London-based paving contractor Stanmore Quality Surfacing (SQS) has taken delivery of its first Volvo ABG paver together with a DD38 tandem roller.

The Volvo ABG6870 wheeled paver was chosen following an evaluation of the machine’s capabilities on a variety of job applications being undertaken by SQS as well as independent third party recommendations. “We were particularly impressed by the quality and smoothness to the finished mat, the good all round visibility and the high degree of manoeuvrability of the paver,” said SQS external operations manager Ronnie Barnes.

Relative quietness was also important, since the company does a lot of night work in urban and residential areas.

The ABG6870 wheeled paver features continuous independent traction control over all six wheels. Powered by a Tier III 122Kw engine, the operator is able to use the ‘smart power’ setting, which automatically adjusts tractive effort according to ground condition and the weight of material available in the machine’s 12t capacity hopper. An ‘active steering’ feature gives it an inside turning radius of 2.5m.

The ABG6870 has a variable screed width of between 2.5m and 5m in standard configuration but can be fitted with optional extensions to provide a 9m width.

With an output potential of up to 700t per hour, the machine can continuously pave up to 40m per minute. For certain applications, the machine can lay up to a maximum thickness of 300mm.

The 3.8t Volvo DD38 high frequency tandem roller, which will work alongside the new paver, has TwinLock traction control and torque transfer system to minimise drum slippage.
