Sika rapid repair mortar’s a flying success at Virgin Atlantic

30 Sep 11 At Virgin Atlantic’s UK Head Office, the concrete staircase in the two-storey car park used by a majority of the 1,500 employees was in need of renovation.

The rigours of time had led to a degree of concrete spalling and corrosion that required a high quality and long-term solution.

Appointed by Virgin Atlantic’s Property Portfolio Management team, specialist contractor Cemplas recommended the fast-acting, proven performance of the Sika Rapid Repair Mortar system from global building product manufacturer, Sika.

Finding spalling across a number of separate locations, Cemplas set about assessing the extent of the damage before submitting a detailed survey report. To address the damage, Cemplas recommended the use of Sika Rapid Repair Mortar for its fast application process and long term performance. The one component fast setting cementitious repair mortar – ideal for use on vertical and horizontal concrete surfaces – is ready to apply after simply mixing with water.

To meet the client’s demands and achieve the tight deadline, Cemplas tailored its approach by simply cutting out the defective areas of concrete and repairing them instead of applying a repair solution over the entire concrete substrate. Offering high early strength, excellent adhesion and a rapid setting, the repair mortar also proved the perfect solution for the project’s short timeframe, without compromising on performance or quality.

The mixed mortar is worked into the wet primed substrate by gloved hand or trowel, to fill all the voids and ensure full encapsulation around the exposed reinforcement. Applied in layers, the process is completed until the correct application thickness is reached, whilst the rapid setting and easy application provides a quick and efficient solution.

The project was completed out-of-hours to allow a smooth and simple application process for the contractors, whilst also ensuring the car park’s users would face minimal disruption. Delivered over a single weekend, the Virgin Atlantic employees returned to work the following week to refurbished concrete surfaces.

On completion of the project, delivered on time and on budget, Cemplas also provided a 10 year workmanship guarantee for the repairs. Combined with the long term reliability of Sika’s market leading range of concrete repair products, the employees at Virgin Atlantic Airlines will benefit from improved concrete surfaces and unrivalled performance for many years to come.
