£18m York park & ride out to tender

27 Jun 12 A contract worth an estimated £18m is up for grabs to build two new park & ride facilities in York.

The works include ground engineering, the construction of new park and ride sites at Poppleton Bar and Askham Bar, improvements to the existing highway network  and new on site facilities.

The proposed Poppleton Bar park & ride site is located alongside the A59 at the junction with North Field Lane.  It will eventually cater for 1250 cars but will be built in 2 stages, with the first stage providing 600 spaces. The second stage will expand the site to full capacity when the additional spaces become necessary.

Askham Bar will hold 1250 cars. It is located to the west of the existing site on the former landfill tip to the rear of the Tesco supermarket on Tadcaster Road.

Funding for the both sites and associated works was approved by the Department for Transport on 30 November 2011. The projects will be funded 70% by the DfT and 30% by the City of York Council.

Subject to final approval by the DfT, construction will start in early 2013 with the site due to open in the spring of 2014.
