The new Hong Kong Link Road will cost about £750 million and is due to finish in early 2017.
“Almost every engineering discipline within Atkins’ Asia Pacific business was involved in this tender including civil engineering, geotechnical, MEP and environmental teams,” said Atkins’ director Tommy Ng. “It marks a significant step into the government infrastructure design and building market and reflects our strong connection with major Chinese contractors”, he added.
The company will be working for China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong), which was awarded the design and build contract by the Highways Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) for the section from Scenic Hill to the boundary crossing facilities (BCF). The 12km link road will connect the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to the BCF located at the north eastern waters of the international airport via a dual three track carriageway.
The road will partly sit in tunnel from an area known as Scenic Hill into the airport vicinity. This will pass beneath existing airport roads and railway links in order to minimise the environmental and visual impacts on residents living in the nearby town of Tung Chung.
Other than the 1km-long tunnel section, there is a 1.6km long at-grade road that passes through a 23 hectare area of newly reclaimed land along the east coast of the airport. In addition to the main civil engineering works, Atkins will work on tunnel ventilation systems, the tunnel control building and remediation works to mitigate the impact on existing infrastructure. An environmental monitoring and audit programme will also be put in place.
