Balfour Beatty contract prepares way for Thameslink

21 Jul 11 Balfour Beatty Rail, working with sister companies Birse Rail and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, has been awarded a design and construct contract worth £4.7m at Tanners Hill, South London.

The contract scope includes the remodelling of a road bridge, footbridge structure and embankment widening works to facilitate installation of a twin track railway between Tanners Hill Junction & Lewisham Vale Junction on the Nunhead Lines. Both junctions will be remodelled as part of the track works.

The works will improve capacity on the line between London Bridge and Lewisham and are required to facilitate train service operations when further disruptive works are undertaken on the Thameslink KO2 Programme, which involves a major redesign of routes into London Bridge.

A new length of single track will be built alongside the existing bi-directional single track between Tanners Hill Junction (near St John's Station) and Lewisham Vale Junction. Before the new track is laid, St John’s Vale Road Bridge will be partially demolished and reconstructed with a concrete pier. As well as a new south span over the new track, the existing embankment along the length of the fly-down will also be widened. The existing footbridge servicing St Johns station will also be strengthened as part of the works.
