Balfour Beatty in Canadian transit win

6 Jun 12 Balfour Beatty has announced that its subsidiary Parsons Brinckerhoff has been named as the general engineering consultant (GEC) for a transit programme in the Waterloo region of Canada.

The project for the regional municipality of Waterloo will be one of the largest public infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the region.

The scheme includes a 19km light rail transit system and a 17km bus rapid transit network through the Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo area. The LRT system will connect the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo with future expansion planned for Cambridge. The LRT will initially have 16 stations including one connecting to bus, regional and intercity trains.

As the GEC, Parsons Brinckerhoff will assist the regional government in preparing design criteria and performance requirements for a private partner that will design, build, finance and operate the LRT. Parsons Brinckerhoff will also assist with BRT design, utility relocations, and construction management, and will help to implement a public participation programme.
