Balfour Beatty lands $470m US housing deal

8 Nov 11 Balfour Beatty Communities has been picked by the US Department of the Air Force as the highest ranked bidder for a project to privatise more than 4,700 family housing units.

The 50-year project is expected to have a six-year initial development period, with estimated project costs valued at approximately US$470m (£293m) and covering an estimated 4,761 housing units. Balfour Beatty Communities’ partners include Balfour Beatty Construction, which will provide construction services, and Niles Bolton Associates and Woolpert, which will provide architecture and engineering services, respectively.

As a result of the selection, Balfour Beatty Communities and its partners will now participate in exclusive negotiations with the Department of the Air Force. The scheme covers the development, management, construction and renovation of homes and other facilities and amenities to meet the community housing needs at six Air Force bases.

The privatisation project encompasses the Minot, Grand Forks and Cavalier bases in North Dakota; Ellsworth in South Dakota; Mountain Home in Idaho; and Cannon in New Mexico.

"This opportunity allows us to broaden our geographic presence throughout the United States, increasing our military housing footprint to 53 military installations within 25 states and Washington, DC," said Balfour Beatty Communities president Chris Williams. "Balfour Beatty Communities is very proud of our military members and their families and the sacrifices they make each and every day for our country.”
