The contractor was chosen ahead of Balfour Beatty. The bidding had been whittled down to these two in June.

Chair of governors Roger Alston said: “It was a very difficult choice between the two companies, as both were excellent and had worked really hard, but BAM’s plans just had the edge.”

The academy, known as George Tomlinson School until last year, is being completely rebuilt. Work is scheduled to begin in December and expected to be completed by March 2013.

Bolton councillor Nick Peel said: “The plans put forward were really impressive, and will create an excellent learning environment for the academy’s students. I am looking forward to seeing the plans become reality.”
