BAM to build festival city in Amsterdam

1 Aug 11 BAM is to build the build a festival city from scratch for September’s three-day Picnic City event in Amsterdam.

The annual three-day festival is designed to blur the lines between creativity, science, technology and business so that people can exchange knowledge, ideas and skills.

It will be held from 14 to 16 September at Amsterdam’s NDSM wharf and this year takes the theme of ‘urban futures’. The idea is that, as the increasing concentration of the world’s population in urban environments provides challenges as well as opportunities for redefining the way people live. According to the organisers, the best way to explore future urban scenarios is to start building a city yourself – both literally and figuratively. During Picnic Festival 2011, attendees will explore potential solutions surrounded by a city under construction.

In the collaborative spirit of Picnic, the city will be a joint production with a variety of partners. Picnic is partnering with BAM to create a “green city” in more ways than one. The Picnic City will be composed of a variety of structures using re-purposed materials from BAM, in the company’s green color. Prior to the festival, BAM will transporting the building materials in a huge convoy from its plant yard in Kesteren.
