BDP in winning team for €540m Danish hospital

30 Jul 12 Ramboll, BDP and Danish practice TKT have won the masterplan competition for a €540m (£352m) hospital in northern Copenhagen.

In reaching a decision, the project panel said: "This proposal is innovative and creative in relation to the brief and demonstrates a high degree of successful new interpretation of the historic facilities, both the buildings and the landscape."

The design work for the new Bispebjerg hospital features 121,000m2 of new buildings and renovation of a further 96,000m2, spanning over 26ha. Construction is expected to start in early 2014 and scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.

The winning proposal plans the hospital in four different quarters, each with its own distinctive character. Green and recreational areas are an important part of the plan together with a traffic solution designed to provide accessibility and easy orientation within the site.

Another important part of the project is to protect the heritage-listed pavilions that form part of the existing Bispebjerg hospital. This has been achieved by creating a spacious park in the centre of the development.
